Interview Mistakes

You would've attended a great college, landed a competitive internship and would've scored an early promotion in your first job. But all your qualifications are meaningless if you can't face an interview and ace it. There's more to it in the interviews than your certificates you bare in your hands when you walk into an interview.  You must be able to articulate your career interests, convince the interviewer your worth hiring, make him believe in what you believe.

There are some important etiquette's to interviews - don't be late, watch what you wear, know your manners - but there are unwritten rules that you must follow to stand out from the rest. If you stand out from the rest the chances of them to hire you is higher. Below are some of the mistakes you should try avoiding, if you are going for an interview.

Not practicing for an interview : Do you research before you go to a company for an interview, prepare yourself with some common interview questions. In a competitive market you must be original and show that you've thought hard about the job, the company, and why your particular skills are perfect match for both. This does not mean you have to memorize things and go.. just be prepared for the common questions with answers.

Modesty is good, but not always : If you are called for an interview it means that the company is impressed by you and now it is interested to listen to what you've got to say. If your modest be nature you must be prepared to boast about you. This would be one good way to sell your self.

Talking too much : Yes, humble brag about your self, showcase your strengths, but don't over do it. Go with the flow, when the time comes for you to shut up, then shut up. The silence between your strengths and ambitions would make it sound real and serious. When you are asked some question keep your answers short and concise. As a rule of thumb you should never take more than a minute to answer any questions.

Lack of specificity : When your interviewer asks for what you have accomplished in your past and they are going to expect examples. So make sure you explain them what you did, how you did it and depending on the job you are applying this varies. But always keep in mind, vague responses are confusing; and you don't want your interviewer confused.

Avoiding eye contact: No emotions are going to help you express your self in an interview. A firm handshake shows your confidence where as an eye contact speaks of your confidence.Body language is really important if you are meeting a stranger, your body language would speak for it's self. It would give the first impression of who you are, which is really important.

Switch off your phones : I'm not gonna talk about it

Relax, but not too much: Your recruiters are professional conversationalists. They can be really fun to talk, they are also extremely observing your actions and reactions

Don't ask about your salary: If you have enough experience and if it's not your first interview then it's okay to discuss the salary details, If not, don't even think of mentioning the word salary in the interview."Bringing up salary in an interview communicates to the hiring manager that you are interested in a specific number, not a specific job. It's about as insulting as a first date asking you how much you make."

Look before you leap: Know where you are going for the interview, do some background research on the company, read about the companies achievement over the past years. It's not that complicated, imagine someone walks up to you and says; "hi, you are so and so right? I have read about you, it was a pleasure meeting you sir". Now wouldn't that simply make your day? The same logic is applied here.

Not taking extras: Take extra copies of your CV, extra pens a note pad. You will never be over prepared for an interview.

Without saying this goes, I'm just saying this anyway; make sure your interviewer feels that you are actually looking for that job and you haven't just come for an interview just because you had to. For the interviewer to get that feeling you have to be enthusiastic and highly motivated
